Food Savvy Kids - strategies to encourage cooking with children and teenagers

Getting kids food savvy

A  food savvy kid knows enough about food to take good care of themselves - that means knowing what a good food choice is, being able to cook some basic foods and understanding what and why we  eat.  All essential skills for your child.

I believe a child who is food savvy has a huge advantage… and we aim to help you give your child the edge! We run school holiday programs, produce great resources and do what we can to support you to get their kids food savvy!

Be sure to check out our School Holiday Program – each time we run them they get better and better – it is fabulous to see so many happy kids learning about food! This video give you a glimpse of why we are so excited! Find out more

Let me explain how Food Savvy Kids works…

We have this site for parents, Claire’s site for kids and the holiday program binds the whole lot together…

The first is this site – food savvy kids. This is for any one who wants to give kids enough food skills to take good care of themselves.

I have my blog which I continually add to. From tips to help you  to news of what we are up to and some guest blogs too.

The second part – It’s my turn to cook tonight – is hosted my teen daughter Claire. Whilst I am integrally involved in the planning of her site, as far as your child is concerned, the whole message comes from Claire – after all – I’m an adult and I will be ‘out of touch’ – right? I personally guarantee that Claire’s nutrition messages are based on robust science, the techniques she shows are the most efficient, and the recipes are written without ambiguity.

Claire  is a typical teenager -  in no way is she a ‘foodie – in fact when we started this project almost three years ago, she could only cook about 4 or 5  meals.  She loves  food but like most kids her age she’s always busy with friends, college and sport and can’t really be bothered spending too much time or effort cooking.  I think that makes her like most other kids when it comes to food – they are interested …  but really only in eating it! Claire has proven ability to relate to kids of all ages – from young children right through to teens her age. (In fact we are surprised how many adults like her recipes too!!)

To access the child part of this strategy follow this link and meet Claire.

This is such an exciting project and it can have a huge impact on your family – from the obvious benefits of your child having good food skills, to the truly wonderful benefit that you will have a night off when they cook! And of course - kids who are able to make good food choices are certainly healthier!

Have fun!

Glenda
