Try this…
Encourage your kids to cook the family meal once a week
This is the best idea to make a huge difference in your family. By undertaking this challenge you are doing your kids an enormous favour, which of course they might not see immediately!
It is a win: win for everyone;
- kids gain skills for a lifetime
- parents get a night off – if you have a couple of kids it gets even better!
Get a plan
So sit down and have a chat with your kids and find a night that fits with their routine – even if once a week is too often – once a fortnight is still great. I suggest you help them by getting them some recipes that the can relate to (obviously I am going to suggest you check out our shop!) - but you will no doubt have family favorites too.
Start with something you know they like
I think the best place to start is by teaching them how to cook their own favorites.
Don’t hover!
Most kids don’t like you hovering around like a helicopter and offering ‘unsolicited’ advice – only offer advice if asked ( yes I know this is VERY hard!!) That’s why in all the It’s my turn to cook tonight recipes we have tried to answer questions before they have needed to ask… Learning to cook is like all other learning – they’re on the path to independence and they sort of have to do it ‘their’ way!
Show you’re grateful
Without being over the top, there is nothing more likely to get your kids to do a repeat event if they know their efforts are appreciated!! Sound familiar?
